3 Areas of Your Business You Should Audit Today

How often do you audit the various areas of your business? When you create your goals for the new year, quarter, or month, do you use your audit as a guide in creating your action steps?

When you create your goals, if you don’t have a clear picture of where you business is now, you will not be able to achieve those goals. Why? Because if you don’t know where you are now, in relation to where you want to go, you won’t get anywhere.

3 Areas of Your Business You Should Audit Today

There are many areas of your business that you should audit on a regular basis such as a time management audit or a personal development audit. However, if you haven’t done a business audit in a while, here are 3 core areas that you should audit today:

1. Client Care Audit

If you don’t have clients, you don’t have a business! Along with that it goes that if you don’t have happy clients, you will get ex-clients. If you want long-term, repeatable clients, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I have a system in place to respond to questions/support tickets/help? Is it working for me and the clients? Does it allow me to respond to clients in a timely and effective manner? How can I improve my system for client care?
  •  Do I update, format, and send welcome packets and/or contracts to new clients in a timely manner? Does the welcome packet truly welcome the new client and effectively prepare them for working with me? How can I improve my intake process with new clients?
  •  Do I have a FAQs sheet or page that answer regularly asked inquiries, so I don’t have to answer the same questions over and over again? Does the FAQ need updating or changed?
  • Do I have a CLEAR way for potential/former/current clients to contact me on my website, marketing materials, social media platforms, or other appropriate places?

2. Business Operations Audit

Business operations are those things that you need to do on a day-to-day basis to keep your business running smoothly. It includes your team, business processes, equipment or technology, your core activities for generating income and more. The smoother your business operations are the smoother and efficient your business will run. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What are the core day-to-day activities related to my business? Do they serve me and my business well or are there activities that need updating, changing, or stopping?
  • Do I have an operational handbook or SOP (Standard Operational Procedures) manual? Does it need updating or revised? If I don’t have one, when can I make time to create a SOP or hire someone to do it for me?
  • What areas of my business is automated, especially for repeatable tasks? What other areas of my business can be automated? What software, programs or procedures do I need to update or change?
  • What team members do I have (or need to have) in place to keep all the moving pieces of my business moving along at a good pace?

3. Marketing Audit

For many, marketing is one of their least favorite activity in building their businesses; however, it is absolutely necessary if you are going to grow your business. Even if you have a full roster of clients, it is important to remain visible and market your business. Here are some more questions to ask yourself:

  • What are my core (signature) services, programs, and/or products to bring in income? Do they need updating, changing or discarding?
  • Do I have a marketing plan or strategy? Do I implement that strategy on a regular basis? If not, why?
  • Do I market my business consistently and effectively? What can I do to be more consistent in being visible and giving value to my target audience?
  • What is my marketing budget? Can I use some help in maximizing my marketing budget and helping me target my marketing efforts for quicker and more effective results?

Now, grab a journal, writing pad, or open up a word document and write out the answers to the above questions. What small, actionable steps can you take right now to make the changes needed that were revealed in your audit? Write out the steps out and then add them to your calendar and make time to get them done!

As I wrote earlier, there are several other areas of your business that should be audited; however, these three areas will have the most impact on your profitability, the most impact in your ability to be efficient, and the most impact in creating loyal, long-term clients.
