Book Review: Go Set a Watchman

Remember when I wrote that Harper Lee was publishing a new book? I finally got a chance to read it. The book is set 20 years after the events of To Kill a Mockingbird when Scout is all grown up.

I was really looking forward to reading Go Set a Watchman because I absolutely loved To Kill a Mockingbird. I had high expectations and I can say that Go Set a Watchman mostly met those expectations. The book is well-written, and it was fun to “reconnect” with some of the beloved characters and to met new ones.

However, I thought the story was slow, and as much as I hate to write it, some of it was boring. I found myself skipping pages and/or skimming some pages just to move the book along. At the same time, there were some parts of the book that kept me fully engaged and entranced.

Thus, I have mixed feelings about the book. Would I recommend the book? Yes, with caution. I think that people who have never read To Kill a Mockingbird may love Go Set a Watchman. I also think that there are many who have read To Kill a Mockingbird who will enjoy Go Set a Watchman but there will be many who don’t.

If I had to give the book a rating I would give it three (three) stars.

Did you hear? Harper Lee, the famous author of To Kill a Mockingbird published a new book, and it came out Tuesday! A family friend first told me about the release, and then I found this article in the New York Times.

Interestingly, the “new’ book which is titled Go Set a Watchman was actually written before To Kill a Mockinbird but is a type of sequal that is set 20 years after To Kill a Mockingbird. Somehow, the manuscript for Go set a Watchman was lost but then rediscovered in 2014.

So, why is the release of this book so epic? Well, Harper Lee never published another book after To Kill a Mockingbird – until now. That is pretty amazing.

I read To Kill a Mockingbird in school years ago but since it has been so long, I have borrowed the novel from the library and when it is done, I am so getting my hands on Go Set a Watchman!

How about you? Do you remember reading To Kill a Mockingbird? Do you plan on reading Go Set a Watchman?
