City of Saints by George WeigelMy comments

Oh my, I am going to cut to the chase and just declare that this is a lovely book! For some reason, I was expecting one of those small coffee table books that just have pictures with some captions throughout. Instead, I got a 317 page history book with beautiful illustrations and gorgeous pictures sprinkled throughout the text.

In fact, there are so many good things about this book, I don’t know where the start. For one thing, the book is very well written. In addition, I absolutely love how the authors are able to weave the life of St. John Paul II into the history of his Poland. I was so captivated with the narrative that I just couldn’t stop turning the pages! I learned a lot while being entertained at the same time, and for me, that is the sign of an excellent book. 🙂

Another thing I loved about the book is the added information in the appendices. There is a guide to polish pronunciation which I particularly appreciated because, let’s face it, some of those Polish words are just hard! There is also a list of Polish names in English and several maps.

If you want to see St. John Paul II in a new light, and gain some fascinating insights about the history of Poland, I highly recommend City of Saints. I give the book five (5) stars.
